Hamrick call it a RAW scan: It produces a DNG file and allows more freedom over white balance and exposure than a straight scan. It isn't doing anything like demosaicing (it doesn't need to as scanners read three colours for each pixel), but RAW seems a reasonable description. It's a raw scan that needs to look better! Where you do this is somewhat moot.

I've worked with some pretty sophisticated scanning software (LinoColor comes to mind) but few products are as robust as Photoshop so, unless you don't own such a powerful image editor, or you vastly prefer fixing the scanned data in the scanner software, I see zero advantage to this concept and it kind of rubs me the wrong way marketing implies this is raw data. If you want to call that a raw scan, OK but it's not raw data. IF you prefer to do the editing after the scan in your scanner software, fine. Or you can just make all the global corrections on the data from the scan software, high bit, any encoding and move on to Photoshop or other products. It's high bit, linear data but the pixels are baked (yes, you can re-edit them). It's useful to point out, it really doesn't at least in terms of the raw data from a digital camera. If you go for the 'pro' option (which admittedly is a deal more expensive than the base software), you get free software updates for ever, a licence to use on two separate computers and the ability to make RAW scans. I hear good things about Silverfast, but I'm a VueScan user myself and find it excellent. Silverfast? If so, what performance benefits have you obtained from the third party software?

Are users content with the Epson supplied scanning software or did you buy third party software e.g. I've decided to buy an Epson Perfection V600 scanner as a cost effective all round scanner for scanning old 35mm slides and general scanning.
